Supercars grand final starts in controversy with Ryan Wood making contact with Broc Feeney on Lap 1

There has been a wild start to the Supercars grand final race in Adelaide with New Zealand driver Ryan Wood getting slapped with a 15-second time penalty for contact with championship leader Broc Feeney on Lap 1.

Wood — the Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate of fellow championship contender Chaz Mostert — turned Feeney on the opening lap.

Feeney entered today’s race 23 points ahead of Ford star Mostert in the battle for the championship.

The 23-year old Red Bull driver started from pole but was spun by Kiwi Wood at Turn 6 on the opening lap.

“There’s hard racing but he was just having a free swing … we paid the ultimate price for it,” Triple Eight team boss Jamie Whincup said.

“It’s pretty grubby stuff!”

But WAU director Ryan Walkinshaw saw things differently.

“He clearly had Woody alongside him and he pushed him in the wall,” Walkinshaw said.

“You can actually see Woody hit the wall and then go into Broc. So Broc’s fighting for a championship. Woody’s got nothing to lose.

“He was down the inside of him. Brock tried to squeeze him into a wall and Woody can’t exactly just disappear.

“So entirely Broc’s fault. And that’s pretty clear and evident from what we could just see on TV.”

The race was brought under the control by the safety car after the clash, with Le Brocq ruled out of the race.

More to come …
